BTS retail is projected to hit $85.4 billion in 2026, up 3.3% year over year, and back-to-college has crossed $100 billion for the first time. Behind those totals is a season that's split into distinct, harder-to-reach sub-audiences, and a lot of targeting still treats them as one shopper.
Back-to-college stopped being a supply run. School supplies didn't crack the top five BTC spending categories in 2025. Electronics, dorm furnishings, clothing, food, and personal care did, some students are putting $10K+ into custom dorm setups, a trend tracking with TikTok's #collegelife tag (30B+ views). Advertisers who've adjusted saw dorm-adjacent revenue climb 74% year over year, with CPA down 68%.
Value-seekers are spending more, not less. 78% of shoppers expect higher prices this year, but parents using four or more cost-saving behaviors are spending 14% more than everyone else. 66% say BTS ads help them find deals, making a clear, visible promotion the most important piece of creative for this group.
Health and wellness is now a core category, not an add-on. Personal care is the fifth-largest BTC category at $7.9 billion, ahead of clothing and food. 88% of K-12 parents say health is a bigger concern than ever, and half prioritize it over affordability. Health and wellness advertisers saw an 88% lift in visit rate during the season.
CTV is the channel tying all of this together. Half of BTS shoppers trust TV ads more than social, display, or search, and three in five have made a purchase after seeing a BTS TV ad, per Paramount's June 2026 study. For considered, higher-ticket purchases like dorm furnishings and electronics, that trust does real work. Peer39's CTV Contextual Intelligence covers 2,100+ program-level categories across 175+ streaming platforms, authenticated rather than declared, so each of these audiences can be reached against the shows they're actually watching.
Four sub-audiences, one bidstream. The BTS Advertiser Guide breaks down what's driving each one in full, and the Category Recommendations Sheet has the web, CTV, and audience categories to reach them individually rather than as one seasonal bucket.
